President's Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Newcastle Law Society.

The Newcastle Law Society is a regional law society which represents almost 600 solicitors, both in the private and public sectors in the Newcastle area. Our objectives are, amongst others, to promote and support local legal initiatives, to lobby on key issues affecting the local legal profession and to assist with the provision of educational and training opportunities for the local profession.

His Honour Judge Ralph Coolahan

The members of the Newcastle Law Society are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Honour Judge Ralph Coolahan.  His Honour was a great servant to Newcastle.  From what some might regard as humble beginnings as an articled clerk in the Public Solicitors Office (nowadays Legal Aid) His Honour later established a substantial practice at the Bar, particularly in the fields of criminal law and personal injury.  Appointed to the District Court bench in 1999, His Honour soon established a reputation for diligence and fairness.  Both professionally and personally His Honour was a kind, generous and compassionate man, and he will be sorely missed.  Our condolences go to His Honour’s loved ones.
